I have always wanted a Kitchenaid Mixer, so when I saw the price where I could finally afford it, I snatched it right up! I am so amazed at everything I have been able to do with this mixer. It is quiet, sturdy, and works wonderfully. I am planning on getting some accessories for it soon. I have had this mixer for several months now, and not one single problem. The attachments, I would recommend you hand wash them, mine turned when I washed one in the dishwasher. But overall, it is well worth the money.

This unit was not purchased at Amazon for reason I will explain.
72 Watts: yes this unit only has 72 Watts, and, because of that, it is the quietist, smallest and lightest unit I have come across. Even the Rival 5-speed unit from W-Mart is noisier, larger and heavier than this unit, and, its slowest speed will splatter your walls (125 Watt motor). The HPM5A was designed to fit in the niche between hand stirring and folding, and, a Kitchenaid stand mixer which, in my case, is a Sunbeam Mixmaster. In regard to filling the niche, I would give the mixer 5-stars.
Speed Differences: the difference between the 3-Speed, 5-Speed and 7-Speed, as far as I can tell, is low range. The 7-Speed offers a true low range. The 5-Speed offers a low speed that will eliminate spattering in most situations. Remember, your hand is controlled by your brain, and, can do a far better job at stirring and folding than any low geared machine. In addition, the 3-Speed and 5-Speed have mechanical vs. digital controls. In my experience the speed of a mixer can be adjusted far faster with mechanical rather than digital controls. All the units share the same motor and body.
Whipping: as far as I can tell the high speed of the 3-speed, 5-speed, and 7-speed units are the same. The high speed is adequate for my usage - but I am a vegan and do not cook with dairy or eggs. Those of you that do may find these machines less adequate in whipping than a higher power machine (but then there is the noise, weight and size).
The accessories: the weakness of the unit (all speeds) is the quality of the accessories, and, for this reason I do not recommend an Amazon purchase. It is for this reason I gave the HPM5AP a 4-Star rating. I tried a number of units before I found a unit which had a Blending Rod with would rotate without wobble, and, wire Turbo Blades with acceptable wobble. I didn't care about the Dough Blades. In my opinion, because of the narrow footprint of many glasses, a Blending Rod with minimal wobble is a necessity. I hope Kitchenaid takes note of the accessory problem. China does not wear ear-plugs when it comes to commerce and money. As a comment, I do like the gauge of the wire Turbo Blades. The thinner the blade, the better at cutting and frothing. The thicker the blade, the heavier duty and the better for mixing dough.

I've wanted a KitchenAid stand mixer ever since I was a little girl. You may even say I coveted it. I've been baking since I was five and the kitchen always seemed like home to me. (I was lucky enough to have a mother that would allow me into that inner sanctum of the home whenever we were out of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies or needed bread for a nice dinner) I diverge.
I finally got this refurb at the age of 21 and it is the centerpiece of my collection in Empire Green. I haven't had a single complaint about it in the years since. I use it for everything. While I don't have a meat grinder and I have the standalone KA Juicer, I have recently added the Ice Cream Attachment as well as the Pasta Attachments. Only spending a few hours in the kitchen over the weekend, my freezer is now well-stocked with homemade bread, pizza, ice cream, and pasta. The powerful engine kneads my bread to a smoothness I couldn't have imagined from a machine. I thought nothing could compare to hand-kneaded bread, but this mixer kneads to the perfect elasticity and the dough doesn't stick to it or the dough hook. I don't have to add in an extra half hour for cleaning when it comes to pizza either. Just toss in the ingredients in the proper temperature, knead for ten minutes, cover to rise for two hours, (watch a great old weekend film) and we're eating pizza once my daughter has decorated her's to a T with fresh ingredients.
Pasta is the newest for me and I am still getting the hang of it. Attachment is great and easy. My whole-wheat recipe just needs some tweaking.
Ice cream is a total breeze. Growing up, my family and I would make ice cream every Fourth of July in the creaking wooden hand-crank machine. If you didn't crank (which often meant pinching your frozen, salty hand in the gear) you didn't get to eat it. Now, I just make my batter, throw it in and leave it for 20-30 minutes, toss in some extras, and it's soft serve, ready to go. (Or hardens to store-bought "premium" consitency in the freezer, if it lasts that long in my house)
Two great ideas for gifts! Who could turn down fresh pasta and custom homemade ice cream?
KitchenAid makes it all so simple. I know that I'll be benefiting from years of history in its engineering for years to come and that my daughter will be able to use it forever as well, if she can wait long enough for mine without getting one of her own. The look in her eyes when the motor hums on tells me she won't be able to wait.

I'm very happy with this mixer. Regarding it's refurbished status: it's hard to tell that it wasn't brand new when I opened the box, other than the stickers in the manual reminding me. It works every bit as well as I expected from a Kitchenaid. In the past week I've run it through it's paces pretty good: I've whipped eggs, mixed some medium thick batters for cookies and scones and made two batches of yeast bread dough, the bigger using eight cups of flour. Thus far it's worked exactly as described in the manual. One thing to note: despite the Amazon warning to the contrary my unit arrived with the flat beater, the wire whip and a powerknead dough hook.

Other than discussing it's refurb status what else can I say about this mixer that hasn't already been said? It's an awesome tool but it won't help you much if you don't already know how to cook. It's not a bread machine minus the heating element you still have to pay attention and there is a learning curve. However if you're already a fair hand in the kitchen it will be an immense help for a variety of chores and will make it easier to bake more often. For me the biggest advantage, especially with yeast breads, is that using this mixer for kneading is a lot less messy than doing it by hand. For a regular loaf of bread the mixer probably saves me all of ten minutes of actual cooking time compared to hand kneading but saves a good half hour in clean up time. That's a huge amount time to save in the evenings after work.

I'm really looking forward to trying some of the attachments available.

I bought one of these mixers fully aware of the fact that I was getting a refurbished unit that may not be perfect. Sure enough after a couple of months of pretty light use the speed control went out on my unit. It didn't matter what power level I set the thing to, the second I turned it on it would ramp up to its top speed and shut itself down after exceeding the normal top speed.

So I called up KitchenAid customer support - after hearing my problem and verifying that I was under warranty they sent me out another refurbished unit. Once I got that one I threw the broken one in the box and slapped the return lable on it, and away it went. Extremely painless.

As for the capabilities of the unit I will admit that I have not done everything that it's capable of yet (for instance, I have not made bread with the dough hook) but everything that I have done with it has been great - cookies, cakes, whipped cream, mashed potatoes, etc. Plenty of power, solid performance, quality attachments, etc.

Bottom line: this item is refurbished so watch out, it might not be 100 percent fixed - but KitchenAid will take care of you if you're unlucky.

Husband and I tried it right out of the box. (It was a fun project together...and then we happily ate the results!) First, we made sure to look for any bits of metal, etc. Saw none. Brushed roller a bit, just in case. We made the Light Whole Wheat (included in the manual), only used the press, not the other cutters. We wanted a thin, very wide noodle (about an inch wide or more) so we let the press make them very thin, then cut them ourselves with a knife. YUMMY!

We boiled some and we froze the rest for later use. BTW: If dough seems like FAR too dry, just add a slight bit more water as you do the final hand knead. Not too much water. Easy as you go. You still want it a bit dry. (We also have hand-crank pasta maker. This should get lots more use because it sets up so easily and using mixer to quickly blend the flours seems faster/less messy.) After eating homemade, light, feathery fresh pasta, I wondered if I would ever buy pasta at the market again. Fresh and clean makes you wonder why we all ever got so busy that we forgot to make OUR OWN food.

I chose the reconditioned model due to the significant price savings, and am very happy with my choice. Although the box and manual clearly indicate that the product is reconditioned, and it doesn't come with the pour shield for the bowl, the mixer itself was in perfect condition, and there we just a few very minor scratches inside the bowl. Those scratches are the sort of thing you might get in your first use of the bowl. This mixer is strong, and doesn't seem noisy to me at all. It's certainly MUCH quieter than our hand mixer. Some higher end KitchenAid mixers have a bowl-lift feature, but I actually prefer to be able to tip the whole head backward and out of the way to get the bowl out. So far, we've made banana bread and a few batches of mashed potatoes using this mixer, and are very pleased with the results.

i purchased this for my fiance this past xmas and it has been great. we have made wheat bread numerous times. along with cupcake and cake batters, brownie mixes, more bread batches. it works great. i had reservations about the mixer because of reading about failures. the biggest issue is the original plastic gearbox(transmission) cover. it has since been upgraded to metal. the plastic cover is known to soften and cause gear failure. when you receive it, just take the cover off and take a peek to see if you have a plastic or metal cover - some suppliers have old stock that has the plastic cover. if you get one of these, be careful as heavy doughs will break it. Don't call kitchen aid and tell them you looked and found you have a plastic cover - they will void your warranty. You are pretty much out of luck if you have a plastic cover. you just have to hope it breaks under warranty and they will replace it with a new mixer with a metal cover. The oil leaking is because of separation of the grease from non use - just turn it on 10 for a few minutes and it will mix the grease up again - it is food grade by the way, safe, but unsightly.....we love LOVE this mixer and we have given it a hard workout and so far so good.

I have the KA 600Pro and I got this additional bowl about 6 months later. I have to say, I use it more than any of the other accessories I purchased for my mixer. It is exactly like the one that came with my mixer - the quality is superb. Heavy stainless steel with a very comfortable handle. Especially for the holidays, the extra bowl makes using your mixer even more of a pleasure. I often make dough in one and simply let it rise right in the bowl. Then I pull out the other bowl to make a big batch of whipped potatoes, a dessert, or anything else I might want. It's definitely worth having.

When and if this becomes available again don't let it slip by. I got it as a gift for the wife for less than a new 4 quart mixer. So it said reconditioned. Big Deal. This mixer is still going after 2+ years of not so gentle use. We make breads, ice cream, do all our fall meat grinding with this mixer. A couple of attachments that we can'tlive with out for this are the meat grinder with the old wooden mallet and the ice cream mixer bowl. We have both styles of meat grinder and we like the older one with the cast blades, not the stamped out ones, and the fact that it had a wooden mallet/plunger that got 99+% of the meat into the auger as opposed to the new one that only gets about 90+%. I know seems like such a small amount but it makes a huge difference during the fall.

We have run this mixer so long one day it was all you could do to touch it because it got that hot. Let it sit for about an hour and off it went just like before.

We bought this mixer seven years ago, and rarely use it. When we do, it has been up to the task. It's heavy, and feels well built overall. I made two batches of cookies tonight with it, and there are just a few things about it that make me worry about it's durability. For one, the speed and lock levers move too easily on the model I have. With little resistance, the levers have a cheap feel. This might be something they all have or perhaps the design changed since then. The motor had just a slight problem going through the dough. It seemed as if it were slightly underpowered in my opinion. Then again, I got this mixer for 0 when Mervyns was going out of business so I don't expect it to perform like the 0 Professional model. I may be nitpicking a little as this mixer has served us well over the years. If I were a frequent user, I'd consider a bigger model with more power. But I'm not a frequent user and this model suits me just fine.

I have owned my KitchenAid stand mixer for over 8 years and have had no problems with it whatsoever. This mixer is so great. I use whenever I can. It actually makes baking fun. Years ago I used to use my moms old Sunbeam mixer and whenever I tired to make a recipe that had a batter that was very thick it would slow the mixer down and sometimes it would stop on me.
