KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Review

Seems they are still selling the 2007 models in 2009 because this was a brand new Kohls store in San Jose. Got it for only ! I couldn't believe it either but it's a heavey duty black model with the lifting bowl with only 325 watt motor. Picture on the box showed a big plastic worm gear in the transmission so longevity might still be a problem.

Anyway, it came with all metal stirs and whisk so they are now dishwasher safe. It's a bit heavy, probably 25 lbs. and the only place for it is in an over head cabnet so I'll have to get it for my wife. The bowl is also a but tough to put on and take off. Best method I found was put one side on then slip it under the back spring loaded lock as I brace my hand against the metal arm and catch the other holder. My wife could do it to so hopefully the amount of effort won't become a problem in the future. I mainly got it for making cookies and heavy stuff like pie crusts. Makes sense to just keep using a hand blender for the light stuff.

The bowl height adjustment appeared to leave too big a gap so I turned the adjustment screw all the way up to as close as things can get. With this adjustment the beaters and whisk still do not touch the bowl but get nice and close. I put the flat beater on and put a soft stick of butter in and had no clearance problems when mixing. Stuck the rest of the mix in and made a batch of cookies with no blending problems. I had to scrape the sides but they all probably need that. After finished I checked the bottom and there wasn't any unmixed poweder. It was a little loud when I ran it empty but seemed to get quieter after mixing the cookie dough. Still a little loud in Stir mode but the faster speeds are quieter. Did not notice any oil leak. Seems like I got a good one though I'll probably never put it to the test making bread. I'll comment back if anything goes wrong.

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Overview

The KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer has a strong 325-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily. The 5-quart stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable. The unique mixing action eliminates the need to rotate the bowl by spinning the beater clockwise and the shaft counterclockwise, moving the beater to the edge of the bowl at 67 different points. This ensures a quick and complete mixing action. The Stand Mixer includes a flat beater, dough hook, and wire whip which will add to the versatility of the mixer.

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Specifications

With its ample dimensions and burly construction, this commercial 5-quart KitchenAid mixer is prepared to be a culinary beast of burden. Smartly engineered so that the beater moves clockwise while the shaft moves counterclockwise, the beater reaches every part of the bowl without requiring it to rotate. Five mixing speeds plus a stir setting means the appliance can do everything from folding cranberries into biscotti to whipping up a fluffy meringue. The all-metal construction includes a heavy-duty motor to handle stiff batters and a hardwearing transmission that ensures continuous power. The mixer’s seamless, stainless-steel, 5-quart bowl stands flat on its indented base and features sealed handle and bracket connections that meet NSF standards. A professional-style bowl lift raises it easily and securely into position, even if it’s brimming with weighty dough.

The mixer comes with a burnished flat beater, a burnished dough hook, and a commercial wire whip. The flat beater is perfect for mixing cake batters, mashing potatoes, and stirring quick breads. The dough hook comes in handy for breads and coffee cakes, and the wire whip is your tool for icings and whipped cream.

Four sealed rubber feet hold the mixer stably in place, and a 3-wire, 6-foot power cord meets commercial requirements. As a safety mechanism, the overload reset button pops out if the mixer is overloaded, and the motor shuts off. If you only bake occasionally, a less heavy-duty unit will do the job. But if you work or recreate in the kitchen, this hard-working mixer can keep the pace. --Emily Bedard
